Where do you make new friends as a parent?

Where do you find it easiest to meet other parents and make new friends?
Becoming a parent changes almost everything, including who you spend time with. Friends without children may keep different hours, evenings out become rare, and suddenly you find yourself with a lot to say about sleep and very few people who want to hear it. Feeling a bit lonely in the early years is common, even when you are rarely alone.
The good news is that parenthood also opens doors. Baby groups, toddler music classes, library rhyme time and the nursery gate are full of people going through exactly the same thing. Shared experience is a great shortcut to friendship: there is no need for small talk when you can swap stories about teething or the latest fussy-eating phase.
Turning a friendly face into an actual friend takes a little courage. Try suggesting something concrete, like a walk after class or a coffee next week, and swap numbers while you are at it. If the first attempt does not lead anywhere, that is fine. Most lasting friendships need several small meetings before they settle in.
Proximity matters more than people expect. A family who lives a few streets away is much easier to see regularly than one across town, and those casual, frequent meetings are what friendships are built on. Neighbours can also become your backup when you need someone to grab a forgotten bag of nappies or watch the kids for half an hour.
Be patient with yourself and with others; everyone is tired and busy. If you are ready to meet new people, ParentMatch helps you find parents nearby with children of a similar age.
